Prescribed Burn (not open to the public)
Date: pending for early Spring 2012
Location:  Arthur M. Pasinski Memorial Preserve, Howell

Fire has historically played an important role in stimulating native plant growth by removing invasive, non-native plants that are not adapted to fire.  This will help restore the rare and unique plants located here in the prairie fen and the oak savanna remnant.  This in turn provides the appropriate habitat for the rare animal species that exist on the preserve.  Target plants are the aggressive Phragmites, Purple Loosestrife, Autumn Olive, Garlic Mustard, Buckthorn, Spotted Knapweed, and Reed Canary Grass.  Funding for this project comes from the estate of Kernie King  - a dedicated conservationist who spent many hours helping remove invasive species on this property.

PlantWise of Ann Arbor - www.plantwiserestoration.com (contact info - plantwise@aol.com or 734-665-7168) has been hired to conduct the burn. They have extensive burn experience with other conservancies, metroparks, and universities.  Visit their website for more information on prescribed burning.
